Digital defence

Archive picture: Netherlands Ministry of DefenceThe networks used by the Defence organisation must be well protected against digital threats. After all, IT assets enlarge the fighting power of a modern military force. Cyber security is therefore an absolute necessity.

Most networks in the Netherlands are linked, and they are owned by commercial parties. The fact that the Defence organisation is dependent on third parties and that systems are interconnected causes a degree of vulnerability. People with hostile intentions may use this vulnerability to gain access to these networks.

The Defence Computer Emergency Response Team (DefCERT) is therefore tasked with digital (or: cyber) defence. The team aims to prevent and counter attacks on the Defence organisation’s command & control and information systems.

DefCERT protects the infrastructure of the Defence organisation. They identify existing and future threats, inform owners and system managers, and act as coordinators in resolving threats and incidents. Both national and international cooperation is of major importance in these efforts.
