Mine Countermeasures Service
The principal task of the minehunters is to keep the sea, coastal waters and harbour entrances free of mines and to clear explosives from the First and Second World Wars encountered at sea (Operation Beneficial Cooperation). Mine countermeasures vessels are also deployed to track down sunken ships or cargo that was swept overboard.
Dutch minehunters are a permanent component of the NATO mine countermeasure flotilla (Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 – SNMCMG 1).
