The primary task for the hydrographic survey vessels is carrying out civil and military hydrographic surveying. That means mapping changes in the shipping lanes and sea floor. The navy does this in all of the waters of the Dutch sector of the continental shelf and in the waters around the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba.
The navy's hydrographic survey vessels are HNLMS Luymes and HNLMS Snellius, both of which were designed and finished in the Netherlands. The frames were built in Romania.
