Meteorology & Oceanography

Effective Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) support is essential to all commanders, their staffs and assigned forces. METOC planning and support is essential during strategic, operational and tactical-level operations to assist in achieving all mission objectives. Incorporating meteorological information into all stages of military planning and operations gives the military commander increased flexibility that better allows him to fully exploit his platforms, weapons and sensors in the most effective way. METOC information greatly assists in force protection and the consideration of the day-to-day safety of personnel and equipment.
Therefore the Netherlands Defence organisation has its own METOC organisation, consisting of a small department at the Netherlands Hydrographic Office in The Hague and a joint operational weather service at Woensdrecht Air Force Base. The METOC department in The Hague is responsible for the future plans to execute operational and meteorological equipment projects for maritime and aeronautical meteorology and military oceanography. Therefore the METOC department attends meetings with industry, other METOC and meteorological departments in and outside the Netherlands. The METOC department is also the official representative for the Netherlands at NATO meetings for this discipline.
