Antillean Militia

Lastly, the Royal Netherlands Navy in the Caribbean is responsible for coordinating conscription for the Antillean Militia, set up as part of the Antillean National Service. This is in part focused on increasing the job opportunities available to disadvantaged Antillean youth.

At Suffisant naval barracks in Curacao, the militiamen are given six months initial military training. This is followed by another six-months period of civilian vocational training. During this phase, the conscripts are taught a vocation of their choice, varying from security guard, metal worker and IT specialist to chef or driver.

Elementary vocational training

The Aruban militia is an inseparable component of the Savaneta marine barracks on Aruba. New Aruban conscripts receive elementary vocational training here, in accordance with the standards of the Marine Corps. After completion of this training, Aruban marines carry out various duties in the barracks.

Joint training

The Aruban Militia platoon ties in seamlessly with the 32nd Company of the Marine Corps stationed on Aruba, due to them having the same military skills, equipment and weapons. Joint training is therefore conducted on a regular basis.
