Second Dutch F-35 leaves factory
6 March 2013, 9.34 hrs
The second Dutch F-35 Lightning II test aircraft, intended for participation in the operational test phase, rolled off the production line in fully assembled condition at the Lockheed Martin factory in Fort Worth, Texas, this week.
The test aircraft, the AN-2, will first undergo a large number of tests at the factory. All the systems required for flying will be tested both on the ground and in flight. The manufacturers will test, for instance whether the fuel system is working properly. Once the testing has been completed, and the aircraft has received a special coating, it will be ready for use, probably this summer.
According to the current plans, the F-35 will then be taken to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, where the Royal Netherlands Air Force will use it for operational tests and for training pilots and maintenance personnel.
