NATO flotilla takes up the gauntlet against terrorism

Under command of Commodore Ben Bekkering of the Royal Netherlands Navy, a NATO maritime group is ready to engage in the maritime fight against terrorism. In the coming weeks, the Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1) will take part in Operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean Sea.
The operation focuses on deterrence and disruption of terrorist activities and the monitoring and control of bottlenecks. The main emphasis is on gathering and analysing intelligence. The flotilla will be supported by maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters, mine countermeasure vessels, a submarine and an AWACS radar aircraft during its maritime operations.
