Hillen: “How do we keep our security ‘triple A’?”
19 January 2012, 10.43 hrs
Minister Hans Hillen addressed the Atlantic Council in Washington on 12 January. He called for NATO’s high ‘triple A’ security status to be maintained, particularly in an age of austerity. During his working visit to the United States, Mr Hillen also met his new counterpart Leon Panetta.
In his address to the Atlantic Council, a think-tank which promotes trans-Atlantic cooperation, the Minister discussed matters which are crucial to the current high level of security in the Western world. Security owing to NATO, which in turn is essential for stability and prosperity.
Hillen: “It will require political will and leadership to prove to our citizens the continuing importance of the Alliance and the necessary defence expenditures in an era of dwindling resources. There is a risk that efforts to maintain our wealth today may come at the expense of our security tomorrow. Europeans need to understand that their wealth does not only depend on the stability of the euro, but also on international stability.”
