Military Pentathlon World Championship starts
25 August 2010, 11.17 hrs
The 57th Military Pentathlon World Championship starts on Friday 27 August at the home base of 11 Airmobile Brigade in Schaarsbergen. Military athletes from 27 countries will pit their strength against one another in 5 disciplines related to military practice.
The military personnel will compete with one another until 2 September in the events obstacle swimming, rifle shooting, obstacle run, hand-grenade throwing and a cross-country run. With these sporting disciplines, the military pentathlon embodies the specific competences that military personnel need to be able to carry out their daily activities: perseverance, fitness, speed and strategy.
The military pentathlon was established as a military sports discipline in 1916. At that time, it consisted of theĀ 5 basic military skills from the early 20th century: running (3-km run with fixed obstacles), swimming (300 m freestyle), shooting (rifle or pistol), fencing (sabre) and hand-grenade throwing. In 1947, the military pentathlon was modernised and the International Military Sports Council (CISM) took steps to organise the first international championship in the discipline.
