The Air-to-Ground-Missile (AGM) 65 missile is designed to destroy ground-based targets. The Maverick can be transported by F-16 fighter bombers of the air force.
In use with Royal Netherlands Air Force
The Maverick has a much greater degree of precision than other 'falling bombs'. The Maverick can be fired from a great distance of up to 15 km from the target.
The Maverick has an infrared tracking system. The system focuses on the differences in heat between the target and the background. If the tracking system identifies a target, an image is projected on one of the multi-functional monitors in the cockpit of the F-16. The pilot then selects the target and 'locks on', thereby linking the missile with the target.
