Accessibility

Defensie.nl wants this website to be accessible to everybody. If, despite this, you end up on a page that is not accessible, please let us know.

What is an accessible website?

An accessible website is easier to use for all target groups. That is why government websites must meet accessibility requirements as laid down in NEN 301 549/WCAG 2.1. This is stipulated in the decree on digital accessibility of the government (temporary measures), Tijdelijk besluit digitale toegankelijkheid overheid. Government websites must publish an accessibility statement in which they account for the accessibility requirements.

How we make our website accessible

We ensure the accessibility of our website by taking several measures as part of our day-to-day processes:

  • Accessibility by design: accessibility is included from the very start as part of our processes for website design, creation and content.
  • Inspection: independent experts regularly test all or parts of our website for accessibility. We also use software for functional and technical aspects as well as the site content. We fix any problems and ensure they do not reoccur.
  • Employee expertise: our employees keep their knowledge about accessibility up to date and apply it where necessary.

Parts where the website does not meet the requirements

  • Most videos are not accessible. Defensie.nl is working to remedy this situation for public information videos.
  • The WCAG 2.1 accessibility requirements apply in full to the PDF files on Defensie.nl. Defensie.nl aims to have all its PDF files comply with the WCAG 2.1 standard, but that is currently not yet the case.
  • Defensie.nl has not adjusted old documents to meet the accessibility requirements.
  • White text on an orange background provides insufficient contrast in automatic checks. This will not be adjusted, because upcoming standards will handle contrast differently. Implementing changes before then would be costly, while visitors would actually perceive less contrast.
  • The form for subscribing to alerts and newsletters issues incorrect error messages. As a result, it is unclear to visitors that something has gone wrong. A change is scheduled for implementation by 1 December 2024.
  • Visitors using accessibility tools are not informed of error messages on the form for subscribing to alerts and newsletters. This will be resolved by implementing ARIA live regions. This is scheduled for implementation by 1 December 2024.
